Design and color choices-- oh my!

Hi!  Long time, no type!

I wanted to hop on and write a quick post to update ya'll on our house building process since we just had our design appointment yesterday!  We got to sit down with the builder's realtor and choose our options, colors and upgrades.  Not only that, but we received our address after the permits got approval from the city and our lot is being prepped for slab.  When we drove by yesterday, we noticed that we have pipes and they are starting to install the footing for our house.

The footings are starting to go in!  And those are pipes where our bathrooms will be! Also, if you look to the back left, you can see the lake!

View from the back of our lot facing the street.  Even more pipes here!

We're not sure when the slab will go down, but they have to prep it, finish the footings, pour the cement and then wait for it to dry.  The estimate is about 2-3 weeks from now they will start framing!  Once the framing goes up, it will go super fast.  The two houses you see in the picture above weren't even slabs a month ago (or maybe they were baby slabs).  Anyway, they were barely (if) even slabs.

But I know ya'll are here to see our design options, so I won't hold back!

Now even though our house isn't a "custom" house in the sense that we pretty much pick our floor plan and then pick from a designated set of options, there are still a good deal of decisions to make as far as what materials are used, what upgrades we do and what colors we choose.  We get to customize it, albeit from limited selections.  Lucky for us we really liked the options they provided us with.

This is the thing that probably took the most time to figure out during our appointment-- the outside materials.  They have samples inside the design room at the model, but you just can't get a sense of what it looks like unless you drive by and see it on a real live house.  We ended up loving this brick--called "Rusty" since it looks like rusty bricks-- even though it was not my favorite on the sample.  My favorite on the sample actually looked like a firehouse or school house brick when it was actually used on a house!  Not really our style.  This is nice because it's colorful and something different.

We knew we wanted the dark garage door, so that was easy. The stucco was the hardest part for us to decide! There were about 10 options that all looked similar as samples, but so different on the actual houses.  Long story short, and after about 3 laps around the neighborhood, we settled on the adobe stucco.. just a little darker than the other top contender.

We also opted to have these lights put up on our garage--one on each side.  They are just so precious and really add something special to the house.  You can see some of the brick choices behind the light-- just a little overwhelming!

Next up: the inside!
Now, these choices were pretty easy for us.  We knew we wanted the dark mocha cabinets, and I knew I wanted this granite countertop.  It's actually the combination they have in their model home, so we could see what it actually looks like and it is gorgeous!  We decided to go with ivory tiles and upgrade them to 16" size.  I really detest colors with orangey tones, so the beige tile was too much for me.  This one is still warm, but not nearly as orangey.  Since we have tile in so much of the house (since we're not doing wood floors in the living room), we decided to go for the bigger tile to really make the room feel bigger (and bonus, less grout to clean!)
These cabinets, granite and tile will go throughout the house so they will be the same cabinets in the study, bathrooms and hallways.
Paint colors! Now this was interesting, because they paint your entire house one color and one color only (even the ceilings!).  We chose the one that they actually have on the walls in the model-- it's called Caravan.  I like that it's a greige that feels warm, but not too peachy or orangey (I really dislike those tones!)
So you can see what it looks like on the wall in the photo, and that it's also the color in the top left frame.  We will probably repaint bedrooms--and probably bathrooms--, but this color will be nice for hallways and the main living room.
All the trim, doors, blinds, etc. will be off white (they call it colonial white).  If you look at the white frames around the paint colors, the off white is on the left bottom half of the frame.  It's just nice that it's not such a stark contrast.
Last, we got to choose the carpet color.  We decided to upgrade the carpet to a shag since the price was unbeatable and it just feels so much better on the toes!  We will only have carpet in the bedrooms, so it was a good and easy decision.
We ended up going with the middle color since, as Mike pointed out, it will be easier to match with paint colors if/when we repaint.  I still like the darker one, but I'm afraid that it would have been too dark.  The one we chose (the middle one) is the one that's actually on the floor surrounding the sample.
*The paint color above is still the color we chose, Caravan.

We chose several other upgrades, as well:
  • stainless steel appliances & gas stove
  • recessed lighting in the kitchen designed for a special project we have planned down the line
  • exterior fans on the patio
  • blinds for our windows
  • a special outlet just for Christmas lights on the roofline
So for now, we are just waiting for everything to go up!  Just under 4 months to go!  We are so excited!  We will keep you updated, and I still have a "what we've been doing lately" post in the works. :)

Happy spring, everyone!
